History safe from turbine

A wind turbine would not affect historical sites on a nature reserve.

The RSPB is hoping to construct a single 100m turbine at its Sandy headquarters.

The Lodge reserve has two Iron Age hill forts, prehistoric flint assemblages, ditched enclosures thought to be late prehistoric or Roman in date and the remains of a Second World War military depot.

The wildlife charity said that any history on the site will be unaffected by the proposed turbine.

There will be an expert heritage asset assessment and the charity will follow advice from the Historic Environment Team at Central Beds Council.

An RSPB spokesman said: “We will be considering both the location of the turbine and the route of associated electric cables in our heritage assessment.

“The location has been chosen in part to avoid known archaeological sites. The hill forts are around 1.3km away from the proposed turbine. The ditched enclosures are around 300m from the proposed turbine location.

“We will consider the possibility of there being previously unrecorded archaeology and if necessary mitigation will be undertaken.”
