Shelburne residents vote on wind farm

Matt Caron, WWLP, www.wwlp.com 2 May 2012

They debated for hours before finally voting to approve the small scale use of wind turbines in Shelburne.

That means the proposed commercial wind farm on Mt. Massaemet was not approved. The vote was by a two-thirds majority.

A developer wanted to place wind turbines on the mountain that would have been about 400 feet tall.

Now, the use of wind turbines has only been approved for small scale, personal or small business use.

Residents also voted to delay issuing the permits for turbine construction until June of next year to allow the zoning board some time to put in place regulations going forward.

Those who opposed the wind farm told 22News it would be an eyesore and would be a health hazard.

Those who supported it say wind energy is both clean and renewable and is the way of the future.
