Consumers back to ZBA with turbine issue for Lake Winds Energy Park

Consumers Energy is headed back to the Mason County Zoning Board of Appeals with a wind turbine issue. When the utility had plans drawn up for its Lake Winds Energy Park, it used a faulty elevation for turbine No. 4, located near Stiles Road and Kinney Road. The site elevation was listed at 673 feet above sea level on the plans but is actually 679 feet above sea level, according to Mason County Zoning Administrator Mary Reilly. The issue goes before the board at 7:30 p.m. May 16 in Scottville.

Reilly said two surveying firms working on the project went to the site to recertify the elevation prior to construction beginning on that turbine. They discovered the error, which required the utility to get FAA certification for the site again, which it has done. The utility is also required to have Michigan Aeronautics Commission and Mason County approval.
