Gathering support: WAIT finds community is behind them

By Heather Wright, www.sarniathisweek.com 27 April 2012

Bill Wright says it is clear the community of Plympton-Wyoming is behind the fight to stop a wind power project.

Wright, a member of the WAIT (We’re Against Industrial Turbines) board of directors, urged about 350 people at a meeting at the Camlachie Community Centre to make their concerns know to politicians and wind energy companies.

Suncor Energy plans to place 62 turbines in Plympton-Wyoming and Lambton Shores. It held a public meeting about the project the day before WAIT’s meeting. It attracted about 350 people, too.

Wright wasn’t shocked by the crowd. “After being outside …at Suncor’s open house and the number of people who were opposed, I’m not surprised.”

And he’s pleased there will be more people willing to raise objections to Suncor and the Liberal government which approved the Green Energy Act which paves the way for companies to build industrial wind farms in communities which don’t want them.

“We want to educate (community members), we want to inform the, we want to involve them,” says Wright, who urged people to write “respectful” letters to Suncor and the provincial government

“If Dalton McGuinty had not made such ludicrous rules, with your tax dollars and my tax dollars support, they (Suncor) they wouldn’t be in the business because there wouldn’t be a business.”

Wright says Suncor is a respected company and WAIT wants to keep the conversation respectable, too.

“It is hard not to come out swinging,” says Wright. “We want to hold it to a high level and take the higher ground.”
