Wind monitoring mast plans thrown out

Plans to site a wind monitoring mast near Creetown to check the viability of the site for wind turbines were thrown out by planners this week.

Developers Vattenfall Wind Power planned to build the 90m-high mast at Blackmyre Moor to collect information over a three-year period, but had received over 50 objections to the monitoring mast alone.

And at a meeting of Dumfries and Galloway Planning Applications Committee on Wednesday, it was agreed to go against the recommendation of planners and refuse the application.

A report to councillors said the mast would be a lightweight, slim, temporary structure which would be “neither prominent nor distracting”.

Mid Galloway Councillor Graham Nicol said: “I think there were genuine concerns from the public, not necessarily just the people of Creetown and Carsluith, who won’t be able to see it, but on the east coast of the Machars from Newton Stewart down to Wigtown and Garlieston, as it would have been very visible from that side of the bay. As 56 people objected it gives you an idea of the depth of feeling about this development.”
