More to the Shelburne Planning Board

Shelburne Falls & West County Independent, April 6, 2012

Thank you for your efforts to preserve and protect the irreplaceable beauty, the people and environment by seriously considering the need for a ban on industrial wind turbine development and for special permit requirements and commercial limitations for any private wind turbines.

We are residents of Charlemont whose quality of life has been damaged by the presence of a single turbine half the size of the industrial wind turbines proposed for Shelburne. Both by day and by night its knifelike blades, dizzying movement or flashing bright red light is an irritant the NEVER goes away.

In addition, 80 percent of the time it is not moving (I am keeping a written og), Sometimes it moves slowly when there is absolutely NO wind – using up electricity.

People came here from Nantucket to see the Berkshire East turbine because he same model is proposed for their seaside community, Despite repeated and specific questioning, they got NO straight answers on energy output vs. energy used to run the turbine from the wind industry people who gave them the tour of the turbine. In addition, on that day, which happened to have a good wind, hey discovered that the noise from 4,000 feet away of this small turbine was quite loud and irritating.

On March 31st, Nantucket rejected the proposed turbine; 62 percent of townspeople voted against it. Nantucket is new on the fast-growing list of towns hat have rejected industrial wind turbines.

For these reasons and more, we urge you to enact the new bylaw that will ban these toxic, unsightly and useless pieces of machinery that would industrialize and destroy all that is precious and desirable about your beautiful town.
