Town opposition to installation of two wind turbines in Derby Line, Vermont, near the CanadaUS border

Stanstead Journal, 25 April 2012

At an extraordinary meeting of Stanstead’s Town Council held at Town Hall on April 17, 2012, Council adopted a resolution opposing the Derby Line Wind Project whose prospective installations are to be situated in Derby Line, Vermont, near the CanadaUS border.

Mayor Philippe Dutil expressed serious misgivings concerning negative impacts that the Wind Project could have: “After an information meeting held at Town Hall last April 4, many questions remain without answers. Our citizens pointed out numerous aspects of the Wind Project deemed to be potentially damaging to our community and the Town has decided to take an official stand on the matter”.

The April 4 meeting was held by a representative of Encore Redevelopment Inc., the project’s promoter, and aimed at informing Stanstead and its region’s citizens about the project’s details which basically consists of the installation of two wind turbines of approximately 130 meters in height, respectively situated at about 230 and 530 meters from the border, in nearby Derby Line, Vermont. Low frequency emissions, electromagnetism, noise, important shading as well as diminished property value and a general loss of quality of life were all cited as cause for concern by citizens in attendance at the meeting. Some also raised concerns relative to migratory bird routes in the specified zone as well as undesirable effects the turbines could have on farm animals in their immediate surroundings.

Resolution opposing the Derby Line Wind Project also mandated Mayor Dutil to undertake the necessary steps to obtain intervenor status for the Town in the case before the Vermont Public Service Board and to represent its position and arguments in proceedings before said Board.
