Three turbines rejected

A North Suffolk business’ application for three wind turbines to help them cut down their carbon footprint has been rejected by Mid Suffolk District Council.

The planning authority rejected the bid from The Chilli Farm, which is alongside the A140 in Mendlesham, due to fears the turbines would interfere with the radar system at a military base 16km away.

The turbines would each have saved 5.54 tonnes of carbon annually.

A statement from the district council which explained the decision to refuse the bid for the 14.97-metre, 5kW turbines, said: “The proposed turbines would be 16.3km from, and detectable by, the PAR radar at Wattisham Airfield.

“As such, they would cause unacceptable interference prejudicial to operational and public safety.”

It added that wind turbines have been shown to have detrimental effects on the performance of radars, including the creation of ‘false’ aircraft on radar systems.
