Madison hosting public hearing on wind farm Wednesday

MADISON – The first official public hearing to gather comments on the Draft Generic Environmental Impact Statement for the proposed wind farm in the Town of Madison will be held Wednesday.

At 7 p.m. at the Madison Central School, the Town of Madison Planning Board will collect comments from the public on the $110 million proposed 36-turbine farm called Rolling Upland Wind Farm.

The project, spearheaded by EDP Renewables North America, the same company that owns the Madison Wind Farm, will take up about 175 acres of space in a 7,000 acre area in the southeast corner of the town.

The new wind turbines would nearly double the county’s current population of 44 windmills. The GE-100 turbines stand 492 feet tall, from the base to the tip of the blade, and are required to be at least 1,000 feet from any nearby structure. Construction is slated to begin in 2015.

Planning Board Chairman Roger Williams said the meeting will not be a question-and-answer session, but an opportunity for residents to comment on the Draft Generic Environmental Impact Statement, a public document that outlines the proposal. The public has until May 18 to comment. Residents who cannot attend the meeting may submit their comments to the board in writing.
