Wind farm protesters ‘reach the end of the road’

Protesters battling against a wind farm near Ellington are expected to bring their campaign to an end after a public meeting next week.

RES UK was given the go-ahead to build the four 428ft-high turbines on the site at Woolley Hill by an appeal inspector.

Now the Woolley Hill Action Group, which opposed the plan because of its impact on the area, has been advised that seeking a judicial review is unlikely to be successful and would be expensive.

An open meeting to discuss the situation will take place at Ellington Village Hall on April 24, starting at 8pm, and campaigners will decide what to do next.

Action group chairman Ron Ward said their advisers had been asked to look into “inconsistencies” between the decision to approve the Woolley Hill farm and a decision to reject another wind farm at nearby Kimbolton.

Mr Ward said: “They have come back and said that although a judicial review is possible, success is unlikely.

“They said individual inspectors have no responsibility to be consistent with another inspector, which is very strange.”

Mr Ward said the small community had already raised £34,000 to contest the appeal and that a judicial review would cost a further £50,000, which was a lot of money to find if the chance of success was small.

The advisers’ report will be put to the meeting, but Mr Ward said his “gut feeling” was that they had reached the end of the road.
