Waking up the neighbours: New anti-wind group in Plympton-Wyoming forms

PLYMPTON-WYOMING – Residents of Plympton-Wyoming are not WAIT-ing to see the first industrial wind turbine pop up in their neighbourhood.

A group of citizens has formed the anti-wind group WAIT – We’re Against Industrial Turbines – Plympton-Wyoming. Ron Schenk speaks for the seven person executive. He says the group is forming as Suncor ramps up its plans for the Cedar Point Wind Farm. Up to 62 industrial wind turbines will be placed in north Plympton-Wyoming and Lambton Shores. Officials expect the 100 megawatt project to go online in 2014.

Schenk says the group’s main goal now is to let the community know about the project.

“If you tell people it’s happening, they can’t believe it is going to happen there because it’s a largely urban area,” he says noting volunteers will be going door-to-door to talk about Suncor’s approved project and several others that are in the works. “The message is you’ve got one chance and then don’t complain about it after.”

Schenk hopes that once people are aware of what’s going on, Suncor or the province will take notice. “Suncor talks about community support as one of its core values, so I want to see if that’s true or not,” says Schenk. “If the bulk of the people don’t care, then it’s a done deal.”

But he says if people start complaining, perhaps someone will axe the project. “It doesn’t matter to me (who stops the Cedar Point project) as long as the turbines don’t get put up.”

Schenk says WAIT hopes to have a large contingent of neighbours at the April 18 public meeting at the Camlachie Community Center. WAIT plans its own meeting after that. The group has also set up a website to keep residents informed; http://www.WAIT-PW.ca
