TIPTON – Within the next few months, work will begin on the WildCat Wind Farm planned for eastern Tipton County.

The Terre Haute-based company, White Construction, filed the paperwork with the Tipton County Planning Department for 25 building permits for the construction of wind turbines.

White Construction hired E-on Climate & Renewables to erect the wind turbines for the planned 200 megawatt wind farm in Tipton and Madison counties during phase one. An investment $300 to $400 million is expected.

Eventually the wind farm will be expanded into eastern Howard County and Grant County.

Steve Edson, planning director, said the county’s wind ordinance sets the permit fee at $1,750 per megawatt. He said each turning will produce 1.6 megawatts of electrical energy.

The permits are expected to be issued next week and construction can start immediately.

Edson said the permits are valid for one year.

E-on is expected to generate 100 megawatts of electricity in Tipton County during the first of four phases of the project, he said.

Edson estimated that 70 wind turbines will be located in the county. Those permits would net Tipton County $196,000, which goes into the county’s general fund.

E-on has already started work on the placement of wind turbines in Madison County, pouring the concrete footing for the turbines.
