Plans for 102m wind turbine

Leicester Mercury, www.thisisleicestershire.co.uk 4 April 2012

A green power company and a charity are considering building a 102-metre wind turbine on farmland.

If approved, it would be placed immediately north of the A14, west of junction 1 and south-west of Welford.

The project is being put forward by Prowind UK on land owned by Wyggeston Hospital Estate.

A spokesman for Prowind UK said: “The turbine will be 102 metres to the tip of the blades and will generate electricity for about 340 homes.”

The company held an exhibition on the project at Welford village hall on March 24.

It said it would review responses from the community before submitting a planning application.

The site is over a mile from Welford, off Elkington Road.

Green energy campaigner Grahame Jordan, who lives in a neighbouring village, said: “This is an interesting project which could help meet the area’s renewable energy targets.

“I have yet to study it in detail. However, it is a single turbine scheme and it is well away from the village.

“I cannot see it meeting strong opposition.”
