RIVIERA – A group opposed to a proposed wind farm near Riviera is urging area residents to attend a public hearing Wednesday to ask Kleberg County commissioners to oppose the project.
Kingsville already passed a resolution stating its opposition to the wind farm, citing worries that it could interfere with radar at area military bases, rendering them more vulnerable to closure when the Defense Department reassesses its inventory of bases.
South Texans for Sensible Wind Farm Siting urges residents to attend the hearing at 7 p.m. at the Seawind RV Park Recreation Center, 1066 E. Farm-to-Market Road 638 in Kleberg County.
Opponents also fear wind turbines could diminish surrounding property values.
Wind developers say the millions of dollars invested in wind farm construction can boost the local tax base. And the Navy says it has worked with the Riviera developer, Texas Wind Group, to minimize radar problems.
The developer is proposing to build 60 to 80 turbines.
