Enxco drops Boone County wind farm plans

French-owned energy company enXco has dropped plans to build a wind farm in western Boone County.

“Regulatory uncertainty” over the fate of the federal renewable energy tax credit, which subsidizes wind farm development, played a part in enXco’s decision to drop the project, a company spokeswoman said.

The pullout is a disappointment to some landowners who had hoped to rent out their land for about 130 wind farm turbines at a reported $14,000 per turbine site.

But the move will be welcomed by opponents of the project who had hired a Zionsville attorney to fight it.

enXco told Boone County landowners of its decision at a dinner March 21, said Shanelle Evens Montana, landowner & community relations supervisor for enXco at its office in Minneapolis.

enXco also based its withdrawal on Boone County’s decision to not renew enXco’s permit for a wind-monitoring tower. In addition, the southern portion of wind farm site lies in a “federal beam path and Federal Aviation Administration zone” where turbines are restricted, Montana said.

enXco remains interested in developing three other wind farms in Indiana in White County, Tippecanoe County, and Jasper and Newton counties, she said.
