Burton Joyce wind turbines rejected

Campaigners say they are “delighted” at a Nottinghamshire council’s decision not to grant planning permission for two wind turbines.

Severn Trent Water submitted plans to build two 132m (433ft) wind turbines near Burton Joyce.

Gedling Borough Council refused permission for the turbines on the grounds they would have an adverse effect on greenbelt land.

Severn Trent Water was unavailable for comment.

‘Colossal’ structures

Campaigner and vice-chairman of Burton Joyce Parish Council, Steve Cluff, said the borough council had made the right decision.

“We are feeling delighted,” said Mr Cluff.

“These things are colossal. I don’t think turbines of this size should be anywhere near a population, they should be set well back.”

Previously, Martin Dent, from Severn Trent, said the firm used large quantities of power in its operations and was facing “pressing energy issues”.

Gedling Borough Council also said the turbines would have an adverse effect on “buildings of interest” in the area, including the Church of St Peter and Paul at Shelford and Gedling House.
