Wind power tax credit again dies in Senate

By Peter Roper, The Pueblo Chieftain, www.chieftain.com 29 March 2012

Legislation that would have extended the much sought-after federal tax credit for Vestas and other wind power companies died in the Senate today when Senate Democrats failed to get the needed 60 votes to pass the measure.

The wind power credit was part of a larger bill sponsored by Sen. Robert Menendez, D-N.J., that would have ended a series of tax credits and deductions for major oil producers. Menendez could only drum up 51 votes for his legislation.

Vestas and other wind power companies have warned they will have to lay off thousands of workers if the tax credit is not extended beyond this year.

Details of today’s Senate vote and the legislative fight over the tax credit will be in Friday’s edition of The Pueblo Chieftain.
