Turbine plans are turned down

By Nottingham Post, www.carltonpeople.co.uk 29 March 2012

Plans to build two 132-metre high wind turbines in Burton Joyce have been refused.

Severn Trent Water asked Gedling Borough Council for permission to build the turbines next to the Poplars Sports Ground in March 2010.

But last night, councillors on the borough planning committee said no.

Among those who objected to the turbines was Carlton le Willows Academy, which raised concerns about the likely levels of noise and shadow flicker from the movement of the blades.

Burton Joyce Cricket Club said the turbines might distract players and turbulence from the blades could affect the movement of the ball. More than 1,190 letters of objection were sent to the council between April 2010 and March 2011.

Only five letters of support were received in the same period.

Burton Joyce Parish Council submitted a 200-page document opposing the plans. Only two councillors voted for the scheme.

Steve Cluff, head of the parish council’s wind turbine working group, said he was “extremely pleased” with the decision.

He said: “It was a vindication of what we have done. It has been a long, hard slog and we are just really please with the decision.”

Councillor Peter Barnes, chairman of the planning committee, said: “I don’t think anybody in this room is against renewable energy but we have got to look at somewhere in the borough where we can put these sorts of things in the right place. This one, in my opinion, is not in the right place.”
