Ovenden Moor turbines set to grow even bigger

E.on is poised to submit new plans for building some of the tallest wind turbines in Britain on the top of Ovenden Moor.

A scheme to replace the existing 166-ft tall machines with 10 turbines 370ft tall was submitted in 2008 and subsequently withdrawn.

Now the company says it is ready to seek planning approval for nine giant machines on the site to replace the 23 which have been operating on the moor for over 18 years.

If the scheme goes ahead, the tip of the turbine blades will be 100ft higher than Wainhouse Tower and they will turn at about 20 revolutions per minute.

They will be visible for miles around and will enable E.On to double the amount of electrical power it generates from 9.2 to 22.5MW.

Project development officer Emma Clark said: “Ovenden Moor has been successfully generating clean, green electricity for almost two decades and we want to make this site even more efficient.

“These new, more modern turbines will allow us to produce enough electricity for more than 14,053 homes and displace the emissions of 28,401 tonnes of carbon dioxide every year.”

The planning application will be submitted to Calderdale Council in the summer or early autumn.

E.On will hold a series of information events to engage with the local community about the changes later in the year.

Ovenden Wind Farm is owned by Yorkshire Wind Power Limited, a joint venture between E.On Climate and Renewables and Energy Power Resources Limited.

It also owns turbines at Royd Moor located to the south of Huddersfield.
