The Scottish Government’s “obsession” with renewable energy is plunging poor people further into fuel poverty, a senior Tory MSP claimed.
Murdo Fraser, convener of Holyrood’s economy, energy and tourism committee, said electricity and gas bills were soaring to help fund windfarms, putting extra pressure on people struggling to make ends meet.
“Wind power is expensive, it is far more expensive than fossil fuels and nuclear power and it is being funded by every one of us,” he said.
“Everyone is paying a flat rate to subsidise wind power. We are taking money out of the pockets of the poorest people in our country and into the pockets of rich energy companies and rich landlords.
“We are robbing the poor to give to the rich.”
