Campaign launched against proposed wind turbines

Campaigners are urging a council to reject a plan to build two wind turbines close to Stamford.

The plans by REG Wind Power would see two 100 metre high turbines put up in land adjacent to Steadfold Lane, Ketton.

The Ketton and Tinwell Action Group on Wind Turbines have written to residents asking them to object to Rutland County Council, local councillors and MPs.

Dick Bell, chairman of the action group, said: “We are not against wind farms as a renewable energy source, but believe in the right renewable technology in the right location.

“Turbine noise at night may disturb sleep and the shadow flicker can make living conditions for those nearby unacceptable.”

Mr Bell said: “The proposed wind turbines are expected to be less than 500 metres from the nearest house.”

They also fear the turbines could disrupt the estimated 30,000 birds in Rutland Water and could disrupt nearby military airfields.

REG Windpower claim they have done a lot of work to make sure the turbines fall within guidelines.

REG development manager Owen Saward said: “We have carried out a detailed assessment to ensure it minimises effects on local residents and the local environment.

“On average the wind farm would produce enough safe, clean electricity to meet the equivalent need of every home in Ketton, Tinwell and Easton on the Hill every year.

“We believe this is an excellent opportunity for Rutland to contribute to the fight against dangerous climate change through a well-sited and appropriately-sized project.”
