Wind turbines ‘spreading across Devon like measles’

Torridge and North Devon planners have been hit by a flurry of applications to put up wind turbines across the region.

Last week Torridge received applications to site a 50Kw turbine near Thornbury, two 46-metre tall wind turbines at St Giles in the Wood and 35-metre turbines at Yarnscombe and Alverdiscott.

In the same period North Devon received an application for a 46-metre high turbine at Knowle Farm, Horwood.

And it was only last week that Chawleigh Parish Council opted to recommend a plan to site a turbine in the Little Dart Valley be turned down, following an angry meeting at Jubilee Hall.

Last week also saw an application to site a 50kw turbine at Yarnscombe withdrawn after the consultation period made it clear the idea wasn’t popular among residents.

One Chawleigh parishioner claimed wind turbines were “spreading across Devon like measles”, while Roland Smith, of the Taw Turbine Action Group, said his group was concerned generally with the spread of turbines in Devon and members had been attending meetings about them whenever possible.

In this particular case Mr Smith said the application for a turbine was “contrary to planning policy and doesn’t enhance, protect or sustain the environment.”

Mr Smith also pointed out there were currently 22 applications pending in Mid Devon, with 24 currently out to public consultation.

Mr Smith believed there were currently somewhere in the region of 70 planning applications for wind turbines pending across North and Mid Devon.
