Wind energy facility law now in the hands of county’s planners

CANAJOHARIE – A proposed local law regulating the siting and construction of wind-energy facilities in the town of Canajoharie is now in the hands of Montgomery County Planning Board members.

Canajoharie town Clerk-Treasurer Susan Smith said when county planning board members meet next week, they are expected to review and make recommendations about the document, which was recently drafted by town planning board members in order to address aesthetic considerations as well as potential public health and safety issues associated with the structures.

A public hearing will be held in April prior to the law’s adoption.

In other business conducted during the Canajoharie Town Council’s March 8 meeting, it was indicated that delivery of the town’s new pickup truck has been delayed until March 19.

Additionally, during highway-related discussion it was noted that there are several bridges in the town that are in poor shape. Unfortunately, there’s no money for bridge work.

Also, because it is illegal to burn brush, HIghway Superin-tendent Eric Bowerman indicated that he’d like to get a “new” used wood chipper. He was authorized to buy one in an amount not to exceed $9,500.

An in-house audit of the town’s financial records conducted by retired state auditor Craig E. Speers, of Buffalo, identified no significant problems. “It all looked good,” said Smith, noting that the auditor made a couple of minor suggestions.

There was also discussion about potential savings that could be derived from the combination of town and village highway garages. Smith noted that town Supervisor Herb Allen has discussed it with Douglas Greene, the director of planning and development for the Montgomery County Planning Department.

Allen is also planning to get together with Canajoharie Mayor Francis Avery to address the issue.
