Applause as turbine plan fails

Objectors to a single wind turbine broke into applause at the decision to refuse the plans by Allerdale Council’s development panel yesterday .

The plans for a 260ft turbine on Lane Head Farm, in Boltongate, Wigton, had been recommended for refusal by planning officers who felt that it would have an adverse impact on the setting of the Church of All Saints, which is a Grade I listed building.

They also felt that insufficient information was submitted by the applicant to asses the noise implications and the visual impact of the development.

Members agreed with the recommendations.

The plans received 95 letters of objection as well as objections from Boltons, Allhallows and Blennerhasset and Torpenhow parish councils. Concerns raised included visual impact, its affect on the church, noise, and cumulative impact with the other turbines at High Pow and Wharrels Hill.

Cumbria Tourism also objected to the turbine on the grounds that it would be harmful to tourism businesses.

Boltongate resident Charles Woodhouse said: “If this development was allowed Boltongate and its church and community would never be the same again and by refusing it you will lift the fear that has hung over the residents and the community.”
