No vote on windmill moratorium until public opinion considered

ALLEGANY – More than 150 people attended a public hearing Tuesday to voice their opinions on the Allegany Town Board’s proposal to create a 180-day moratorium that would put a hold on all activities related to the construction of a wind turbine farm.

Allegany Town Supervisor John Hare opened the meeting by telling the residents that the town wouldn’t vote on the issue until their comments, as well as written comments submitted to the town hall by March 9, could be reviewed. Mr. Hare said the board will then vote on whether to enact a six-month moratorium at a future meeting.

“This topic will be on our agenda at the March 13 meeting, but I can’t guarantee that there will be a final vote at that time,” Mr. Hare said.

He explained that the moratorium was being considered to give the town board an opportunity to review the wind law as well as New York state’s Power Act of 2011, also known as Article 10.
