Helix wind power facility asks for second extension

East Oregonian, www.eastoregonian.com 28 February 2012

The Helix Wind Power Facility, a proposed 201-megawatt wind farm northwest of Helix, wants more time to build.

On Feb. 3, Iberdrola Renewables, the parent company, asked the Oregon Energy Facility Siting Council to extend its deadline to start construction to Aug. 5, 2014, and the end construction date to Aug. 5, 2017.

The Oregon Department of Energy is accepting public comment on the extension request through March 19. Comments can be sent in writing to John G. White at the Oregon Department of Energy, 625 Marion St. N.E., Salem, 97301-3742; by fax to 503-373-7801; or by email to john.white@state.or.us.

This is the second amendment the company has asked for the wind farm.

The siting council approved the first amendment in June 2011. It nearly doubled energy production and more than doubled the size of the wind farm, from 60 turbines producing 102 megawatts to 134 turbines producing 201 megawatts. The expansion added 13,000 acres to the proposed project.

The siting council approved the original wind farm in 2009.
