Anti-turbine protest planned for weekend

It’s being billed as a CAW revolt.

Members of S.T.O.P. – Saugeen Shores Turbine Operation Policy, a resident-based advocacy group dedicated to educating the public on the risks of industrial wind turbine operating too close to people’s home, workplaces and schools – is organizing a protest parade in Port Elgin for Saturday, March 3 from 1 to 3 p.m.

Tractors of all sizes, trucks, trailers and decorated cars are being asked to assemble at 12:30 p.m. at Doll Road and Highway 21, across from the Bruce County Library in Port Elgin’s industrial park Walkers are welcome to join the parade at any point, as protestors demand a moratorium on wind turbine construction.

The protest parade will begin at 1 p.m. and will head south on Hwy. 21, ending at the CAW gates, the home of Saugeen Shores’ latest industrial wind turbine.

Construction on the 35-storey high turbine was completed a couple of weeks ago.

“Town and country folk … unite”, a poster promoting the protest parade reads. “CAW’s turbine represents why we need a moratorium now … health and safety problems, property devaluation, denial of municipal input, hurts tourism, kills birds, no government accountability and skyrocketing electricity bills.”
