U.S. regulators reduce wind-energy area off Rhode Island

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – In response to objections from the region’s fishermen, federal regulators have reduced the area in which a wind farm could be built in waters off Rhode Island and Massachusetts.

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management announced Friday that in identifying a so-called “Wind Energy Area” in Rhode Island Sound, it had restricted its size to avoid fishing grounds around Cox Ledge.

The zone selected by the bureau is located within the Area of Mutual Interest that was chosen for development by Rhode Island marine planners as part of a two-year study.
