On the wings of a youthful and energized core of support, the Madaket wind-turbine proposal is moving to Town Meeting, after young people turned out in droves late last month to express their support for the project to the Board of Selectmen.
But since then the turbine proposal has been received with skepticism by two key municipal boards – the Zoning Board of Appeals and the Finance Committee – which will render their own judgments on the project and could seriously hamper its chances with voters March 31.
Last week the Zoning Board of Appeal heard the town’s application for a special permit that would allow the proposed 900-kilowatt, 324-foot turbine to exceed the town’s 30-foot height restriction, and also considered the town’s request for a variance from the so-called “fall-zone” setback requirements for a wind-energy conversion system at the landfill.
