Announcement of the formation of:
On February 8, 2012, in response to recently proposed Wind Energy development in Kern County, the leadership of various local Organizations and Groups opposed to further wind development in the Sierra Nevada/Tehachapi Mountains and surrounding areas in Kern County met to discuss and form a coalition of these groups. The new and unified group is called UNITED CITIZENS AGAINST WIND POWER, or “UCAWP”.
The local organizations that are members of UCAWP include Friends of Sand Canyon, Friends of Mojave, Friends of Piute Mountains, Tehachapi Communities for Responsible Energy Development, and Ranchers for Responsible Conservation. Leaders of additional less formal Groups from Twin Oaks, Kelso Valley, and Golden Hills also met and joined the Coalition.
At the meeting, a joint operating agreement was reached and an executive committee made up of the leaders of the member Organizations and Groups was formed to establish a working structure for the coalition UCAWP. Under the agreement, each Organization and Group will retain its own unique identity while merging their strengths and abilities through this fresh alliance. UCAWP will be the umbrella coalition that provides better organization and stronger coordinated efforts. Discussions are ongoing with a number of additional Organizations and Groups in the greater Palmdale & Lancaster area of LA County, and it is expected that they will also join or work closely with the coalition UCAWP.
The Chairman of UCAWP is Mike Fortuna. Josh Boswell has been selected as the national/international liaison to establish and enhance UCAWP’s growing base of worldwide contacts dealing with the devastating human and environmental effects of these utility scale wind projects. Focus teams have been formed for the purpose of investigation, legal issues, membership, fund raising, and public information. A web site for UCAWP is under construction. For the time being, the Tehachapi Communities for Responsible Energy Development’s Facebook page and Twitter account will be the main outlets for UCAWP information and communication. (You can find them on Twitter at tcred93581 on YouTube at TCREDable and on Facebook as Tehachapi Communities for Responsible Energy Development)
