Residents and councillors question wind energy project

West Grey residents opposed to a proposed wind turbine project east of Durham picketed outside the municipal administration building. Later about 70 of them packed the council chambers located in Durham. They came to hear officials with Florida based NextEra Energy update council on plans to build 10-14 turbines in the Priceville area.
Councillors heard that since the company has expanded the proposed area in which it plans to locate its wind farm the consultation process must start all over again.
That area now extends north to Concession 6 in the former Glenelg Township north of County Rd. 4, south to Stone Hill Rd., on the east to the Glenelg Artemesia town line and west to the Baseline Rd.
On July 4 the company was awarded a contract under the province’s Feed In Tariff program to sell power. That provided the impetus needed to move ahead with the project. It’s a project that dates back several years prior to the Green Energy Act.
