Anne Murray’s letter part of public consultations

HALIFAX – A letter from Anne Murray opposing a proposed wind farm in the Pugwash area will be considered as part of the public comments phase for the project’s environmental assessment, says a spokeswoman for the Environment Department.

Murray sent the letter to Premier Darrell Dexter on Tuesday asking him to stop the project she says is incompatible with Pugwash and the Gulf Shore area.

“There is a process for responses from the premier’s office, but the letter will be included in the public consultations phase that goes with the environmental assessment,” Lori Errington said Wednesday.

Errington said the environment assessment filed by Atlantic Wind Farms will go through a 30-day public consultation phase. From there, the assessment will go to the minister’s office. The minister could ask for more time, say yes or now to the project or approve it with conditions.

The department spokeswoman said it will likely be the end of March before a decision is made by the minister.

Atlantic Wind Farms wants to erect up to 12 turbines near the Irishtown Road. The project is much smaller than the one proposed in 2007. That one would have seen up to 27 turbines erected along the Gulf Shore.

Company president Charles Demond said the new proposal has fewer turbines and is further from the shoreline and cottages in the area.

Demond was not available for comment again Wednesday.
