Speaker backs turbine protest

Leighton Buzzard Observer, www.leightonbuzzardonline.co.uk 20 February 2012

The Speaker of The House, Aylesbury Vale MP John Bercow, turned up at a roadshow in Drayton Parslow to throw his weight behind the campaign to halt a controversial wind farm.

His backing for the protest against plans to erect four massive wind turbines in Dorcas Lane, near Stoke Hammond, flies in the face of his own Government’s continued support. Mr Bercow is president of the Stop Dorcas Lane Turbines action group and told supporters at the Saturday roadshow that he would do all that he could to block the scheme.

SDLT vice-chairman, Joseph Creswell, said: “Because of his position as Speaker he can’t go onto the floor of the House and speak out against the plan but he has promised that he would work behind the scenes. Mr Bercow spoke to everyone at the roadshow and reaffirmed his commitment to us which was very pleasing to hear.”

The last roadshow was held in Stewkley on Saturday when a spectacular cake, made by one of the supporters, was unveiled.

This Thursday, at 7.30pm, David Butterworth from Force 9 is giving a presentation to the Leighton Buzzard Society and the public at Gables Hall, Wing Road, Linslade. Both Friends of The Earth, which supports the turbine scheme, and SDLT, will be in attendance.

From now until the planning application is decided by Aylesbury Vale’s development control committee (expected to be the end of April) the action group, made up of hundreds of residents from the villages surrounding the turbine site, will be preparing their written argument to rebut the application by Force 9 to build the wind farm.
