Concerns expressed over Llanealhaern wind turbine scheme

Concerns were raised about a proposed new wind turbine at a public meeting.

About 120 residents of Llanaelhaearn in Gwynedd packed out the community centre for a meeting convened by Antur Aelhaearn.

Concerns were raised an questions asked over proposals to site the large 500kw wind turbine on a nearby hill.

If given the go-ahead, the structure would stand over 220ft (67m) – taller than the Marquess of Anglesey Column (27m), the Statue of Liberty in New York (46.5m) and even Nelson’s Column in London (51m).

The site has been selected from six potential areas within the locale.

Questions ranged from the green credentials of the proposal to the wide ranging financial considerations.

The efficiency and financial rewards from wind turbines of this magnitude were also questioned, and the visual and noise implications.

The ecological impact the project would have on the area was also a major concern to most attending.

Concerns were also expressed over the impact on wildlife.

Antur Aelhaerarn’s aim is to initiate green projects that will benefit the community and the economy.

If built funds from the turbine would be reinvested into the village and it was claimed the project would reduce the village’s carbon footprint.

Antur Aelhaearn’s founding chairman Dr Carl Clowes said: “We need a sustainable energy project that suits the surroundings and environment.”
