St. Paul panel votes against Metro State’s proposal for wind turbine

Credit:  Frederick Melo, Pioneer Press, www.twincities.com 17 February 2012 ~~

Metropolitan State University’s plans to build a wind turbine by its library at 645 E. Seventh St., between Maria Avenue and Mounds Boulevard, suffered a setback this week when the St. Paul Planning Commission’s zoning committee voted 4-2 to reject the proposal.

The committee received three letters of support for the turbine and three letters against it, as well as a community petition in opposition. At the zoning committee hearing on Thursday, one person spoke in favor of the turbine and six against.

The three-blade, 20-kilowatt turbine would have sat atop a free-standing pole 104 feet high, for a total height of 120 feet. The District 4 Planning Council and city staff had recommended that the committee approve the project, noting that Macalester College has maintained a similar turbine on its St. Paul campus since 2002.

The turbine would have been used for researching alternative energy.

A call to Metro State was not immediately returned Friday.
