Bright lights for towering turbines

In terms of the visual impact, Fairlie Community Councillor John Riddell described the Environmental Statement for SSE Renewable’s 600ft wind turbines at Hunterston, as among ‘the worst that you could get’ in terms of visual impact, and added that there would be bright lights on top of the turbines for the purposes of airplanes.

He also pointed out that a previous application for a wind farm, which was half the size, was unanimously rejected by North Ayrshire Council, and thrown out at a public enquiry. Professional advice received by the community council was received to state that there was nothing to stop SSE Renewables from re-applying at the end of their five year deadline, to carry on with the development, or another applicant to take over. Mr Riddell also stated that there was a lack of job opportunities locally through the project, and said if there had been more employment suggested for the site, it would have been more appealing.
