SDG&E contracts more solar, wind power

The electric utility serving San Diego has signed contracts to purchase energy from a solar installation planned in the Imperial Valley and a wind farm under construction in the Tehachapi region near Rosamond.
State regulators still must evaluate and approve the purchase agreements, outlined by San Diego Gas & Electric in a news release on Thursday, before costs can be passed on to customers. Terms were not released.
Under a 25-year contract, SDG&E would purchase 200 megawatts of generation capacity from the Mount Signal Solar project east of San Diego County. The power – enough to sustain roughly 72,000 homes – would be transmitted over the Sunrise Powerlink, a 117-mile transmission project slated for completion this summer by SDG&E.
The San Diego-based, investor owned utility entered another contract with a subsidiary of Spain’s Iberdrola to purchase 100 megawatts of electricity produced at a partially completed wind plant in Kern County. That power would be enough for 40,200 homes in SDG&E territory.
Turbine towers for Iberdrola Renewables’ Manzana Wind facility were imported through the Port of San Diego.
