Campaigners vow to fight Saxby Wold wind farm developers if they appeal plan again

Scunthorpe Telegraph, www.thisisscunthorpe.co.uk 17 February 2012

Campaigners are gearing up for another fight against a proposed wind farm development, despite the scheme being unanimously rejected by councillors.

All members of North Lincolnshire Council’s planning committee voted against granting permission for RWE npower’s 16-turbine Saxby Wold project – to the delight of around 200 objectors who packed a meeting to discuss the proposal.

But bosses at the company have revealed they are likely to appeal against the decision and trigger a public inquiry.

The wind farm was rejected over concerns about the impact on the landscape, noise issues and the look of the development.

Bosses thew out the plans despite RWE npower arguing it would provide an economic benefit for the region and the opportunity for job creation.

A similar application was refused permission by the council last year and an appeal by the company was withdrawn in favour of concentrating on the latest application.

Neil Cameron, chairman of pressure group Saxby Wold Against Turbines (SWAT), said he would be disappointed if a second appeal was lodged, but was ready to fight on.

He said: “I think they should listen to what they have been told to do.

“It was a unanimous decision by the planning committee.

“Obviously, we are ready for another fight if necessary, but we really do hope this time, second time around, that RWE will listen to what has been said.

“This simply is not the right place for a wind farm.

“This application has now been opposed by nine parish councils and two town councils and has been refused by North Lincolnshire Council twice.

“It would be very disappointing if they don’t listen to that.”

Jenny Haynes, secretary of the North Lincolnshire branch of the Campaign to Protect Rural England and a resident of Horkstow, near where the turbines were earmarked to be sited, said she was also prepared for a probable appeal.

She said: “The firm did originally appeal before and that would have been heard by now, so we were gearing ourselves up for that.

“We had already done a lot of work and submitted our initial statements, so we are not giving up, despite only having a fraction of the resources the company has.

“We will still have to present the case to an independent planning inspector and hope they agree with us.”

Mike Parker, head of onshore development for RWE npower Renewables, said the firm was likely to appeal against the council’s decision.

He said: “We believe we gave North Lincolnshire Council a real opportunity by pulling the appeal we had launched in the first place to fully consider the application for a second time.

“We, as reputable developers, believe very much in the development and the way it has been packaged and put together.

“We very much will be looking to take this to a public inquiry. We regret this will take additional costs over time from the council’s purse, which is very much stretched at the moment, given the current economic climate.”
