Wind turbines in Atlantic Highlands would cost $25,000 each

ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS – Wind turbines in the harbor would cost about $25,000 each and could be as tall as 60 feet, according to information presented to the Harbor Commission Tuesday.

Councilman Jacob Hoffman, the Borough Council’s liaison to the commission, along with Commissioner Frank McDonald said no locations for turbines have been decided. Hoffman has argued previously that the turbines could generate thousands of dollars in electricity from the wind.

Each year, the borough spends about $400,000 for electricity, he said.

At the Harbor Commission meeting, McDonald said there are federal and state grants for the project.

He estimated one-third of the money would be from federal grants and about $10,000 from the state.

At a council meeting last week, Hoffmann told the other council members of the ongoing discussion between the commission, the mayor and representatives from Turbine Advantage Co. of Manasquan and the Urban Green Energy of New York, the company that manufactures the wind turbines. Borough officials will continue to move forward with the possibility, Hoffmann said.

“I’m hoping we can have a presentation (from the companies at a Harbor Commission meeting) in about a month or so,” he said Tuesday.

Last week, at the council meeting, Mayor Frederick J. Rast III said he wanted to explore the possibility.

“Look, this may not work out, but it is silly for us not to look into it,” Rast said.
