Lib Dems are facing storm of protests; Windfarm protesters to rally at conference

Campaigners protesting against the “proliferation” of windfarms across Scotland plan to lobby the Liberal Democrats next month.

Members of the Stop Highland Wind Farms campaign group are holding a rally outside Eden Court Theatre in Inverness, where the party is holding its spring conference, on March 3.

UK Government ministers are expected to attend the conference.

Protest group convener Pat Wells said public awareness of the windfarm “scam” in Scotland was increasing daily.

“The publicity about the huge sums of money paid to developers to switch off turbines because it was too windy, coupled with the inability of windfarms to produce any electricity at times of high pressure has caused supporters of renewable energy to challenge the value of wind power generation,” she added.

“For these reasons, among others, it is time for people to make their opposition clear to the politicians responsible for energy policy and planning policy.”

Mrs Wells said the Lib Dems, who are in coalition with the Conservatives, need to show “they care” about people in Scotland who are living under the threat of multiple wind farm developments.

“With council elections in may and the referendum for independence looming we need to know the politicians we vote for are listening to us,” she added.

The group hopes to hold talks with UK Energy Secretary Ed Davey.

Representatives met Scottish Energy Minister Fergus Ewing last October when the SNP held a conference at Eden Court.
