Turbine is a ‘risk to RAF safety’

A wind turbine near Filey could hamper Ministry of Defence operations, it has been claimed.

The plan for a 46 metre turbine – put forward by a Bempton farmer – will interfere with important radar operations at RAF Staxton Wold.

A statement said: “The probability of the radar detecting aircraft flying over or in the vicinity of the turbines would be reduced, and the RAF would be unable to provide a full air surveillance service in the area of the proposed wind farm.”

Resident Bernard Traves also warned the turbine could be seen from Filey Bay.

He added: “This turbine will be approximately one and a half times taller than the Flamborough lighthouse, so it is going to be some structure.”

However, bosses at the RSPB Bempton have previously said they did not believe the proposals posed a conservation threat.

East Riding of Yorkshire planning chiefs are due to make a decision on the application later this year.
