Troupsburg may have open house for wind power questions

Troupsburg, N.Y. – Troupsburg residents concerned about wind projects coming to town may have a chance to hear more information in future months.

On Thursday Supervisor Tammy Johnson said that Tim Ahrens, a representative from Seattle-based Ridgeline Energy, spoke to the town board Wednesday regarding the companies ongoing study to see whether bringing wind power to Troupsburg is feasible.

Johnson said the company is still speaking with landowners in the area, and that to field questions on the project an open house may be held at the fire hall. No date has been scheduled for the information session.

Ahrens first spoke with the board in April about the study and the company’s interest in the town. Invenergy, another company conducting studies in Canisteo and Jasper, has also approached the town regarding a potential project along the border with the Town of Jasper.

In December the board approved a local law that established height and sound limitations for turbines, as well as determining set-back limits from property lines and public roads.

The law established a height limit of 500 feet for turbines. Decibel maximum limits were set at 60 decibels 10 percent of the time, 50 decibels 90 percent of the time, with 70 decibels the maximum sound for turbines.

Turbines also have to be at least 600 feet away from property lines, 500 feet from the nearest road, and 1,000 feet from the nearest off-site residence.

In other business, the board:

Scheduled a public hearing for the fire and ambulance contracts for 7 p.m. March 14 at the town hall.
