Objectors mobilise as Cumwhinton turbine fight drags on

Opponents of plans for a 328ft wind turbine near Cumwhinton have called a public meeting to mobilise support.

Bolsterstone Innovative Energy wants to erect the turbine at Newlands Farm, near M6 junction 42.

Carlisle city councillors refused planning permission on the grounds that it would be too close to Cringles Farm and Beech Cottage. Cringles Farm is only 460 yards away.

Bolsterstone has appealed, triggering a planning inquiry to be held at Carlisle Civic Centre.

It is due to start on May 29 and is expected to last three days.

The public meeting will be held at 7.30pm on Wednesday at Cumwhinton Village Hall.

Carlisle MP John Stevenson, who backs the objectors, is unable to attend but is sending a representative.

Allison Stamper, who lives at Cringles Farm, said: “The idea is to keep everybody informed and to mobilise support. We want everyone to be aware of the process.

“We will require some fundraising and that will be discussed.”

Bolsterstone originally wanted to build three turbines at Newlands Farm.

That scheme was thrown out in 2010, following a planning inquiry, prompting Bolsterstone to table two more applications – one for a single turbine, the other for two.

Both brought more than 1,100 objections and were rejected last November.

Bolsterstone has appealed only against refusal of the scheme for a single turbine.
