Wind turbine bid stalled by appeal to planning board

CHARLESTOWN: Plans for an electricity generating wind turbine near the town have been stalled following an appeal to An Bord Pleanála, writes Marian Harrison.

Wind Energy Direct received the go ahead from Mayo County Council to erect an 85-metre high turbine at Brackloonagh despite locals submitting six separate objections to the project.

Marie Osvald Caffrey, with an address in Dublin, was one of those objectors and she has now brought the case to the planning appeals board.

She objected to the erection of the turbine close to TJ Grady’s factory on the basis of its visual impact on her family home and the village.

“This is further industrialisation of our village and cannot be considered sustainable planning.

“In coming to your decision please consider that if you draw a circle around the Grady property there are approximately 17 homes immediately bordering the property of this factory where the wind turbine is being constructed.

“The Ballymote Road runs alongside the proposed construction site and is a busy country road. From a health and safety point of view and with the home and traffic density in mind I would ask the council to consider what the effects might be if a blade or blades snapped off as has been known to happen,” read her letter of objection.

An Bord Pleanála is due to announce its decision on the project on May 23 next.
