New bid for wind turbine

A planning application has been lodged for an 81-metre-tall wind turbine for farmland off Betty Haunt Lane, near Calbourne.

The application, for the Great Park Wind Turbine, is accompanied by scores of pages of environmental, landscape and noise assessments.

Landscape consultants concluded it would have an “acceptable” impact on the countryside and there were no important breeding populations of birds affected.

Consultants also examined the potential effect of noise on people living nearby.

The report looked at 11 nearby properties and concluded noise from the blades and turbine was “not a material factor”.

They also examined “shadow flicker”, another factor which has proved controversial in other applications across the country.

They concluded that of the three closest properties within 520 metres of the turbine, only one would be affected by sunlight shining through the revolving blades.

They predicted that during January, February, November and December, one property, Pondacre Farm, would be affected for a total of 29.14 hours.

People have until February 24 to comment on the application, which can be viewed on the Isle of Wight Council’s website www.iwight.com
