Appeal over refused wind turbine plan

Severn Trent Water is set to appeal against Lichfield District Council’s decision to refuse its plans for a wind turbine at Hammerwich.

The company originally submitted an application in 2010 but councillors blocked it last June.

The application will be reviewed by a Government inspector at the open hearing in LDC’s council chamber on Wednesday February 1 at 10am.

Severn Trent wants to build a turbine which reaches 125.25 metres in height at Burntwood Sewage Treatment Works off Peter’s Lane.

Its design statement refers to the process it followed to reduce 5,000 potential sites down to 12 which include that at Hammerwich.

The company also says no trees will need to be removed to accommodate the turbine, and promotes the green aspects of the scheme.

“The Government sees renewable energy as part of a sustainable way of living that will best provide for ‘long-term health and quality of life’,” says Severn Trent.

Residents, however, agree with LDC that the wind turbine plan represents “inappropriate development in the green belt”.

Simon Pearson (51), said: “Many people enjoy walking, horse riding and dog exercising in the area and public footpaths actually converge right under where the turbine is proposed.”
