Documentary on wind farms to be screened locally

A first-run documentary titled “WINDFALL” will be screened for free on Feb. 2 and Feb. 4 at two Champaign County locations.

The 83-minute documentary opens in selected major cities on Feb. 3, but local critics of utility-scale wind turbines and wind farms said they’ve received permission from the film’s producer to screen it locally a day earlier than the national opening.

WINDFALL is a First Run Features documentary with the theme, “Wind power: It’s clean; it’s green; it’s good. Or is it?”

The film depicts the lives of Meredith, N.Y. residents who have experienced the construction of a 40-turbine industrial wind farm. According to the film’s promotions department, “WINDFALL, Laura Israel’s richly photographed feature-length film, documents how this proposal brutally divides the people of Meredith as they fight over the future of their community. Attracted at first to the financial incentives that would seemingly boost their dying economy, many residents grow alarmed once they discover that the 400-foot high windmills slated for Meredith may bring side effects they never dreamed of. Opposition intensifies when they discover that the fiscal model for wind energy development produces huge profits, not for host towns like Meredith, but for a mysterious group of outside investors, aided and abetted by huge tax breaks and Wall Street sleight-of-hand.”

Both local screenings of the documentary – which has been lauded by film critics in the New York Times, Minneapolis Star Tribune and Huffington Post – will be at 7 p.m.

The Feb. 2 showing is at Mechanicsburg Christian Fellowship Church on Allison Road. The Feb. 4 screening is at the Champaign County Community Center.
