Plans for two giant wind turbines in Weston Longville can now go ahead after Bernard Matthews won its eleventh hour appeal.

The government’s planning inspectorate has overruled Broadland District Council’s decision not to allow the 125m structures after holding a three-day hearing at the village hall in November.

Residents reacted angrily to the plans, which include a substation and a permanent meteorological mast, when they were first submitted in August 2010 and an action group was formed to fight them.

Broadland councillors rejected the proposals – against officers’ recommendations – because of the scale of the turbines and their impact on the surrounding landscape.

Bernard Matthews was refused planning permission in January last year and launched the appeal in June – just within the six-month deadline.
