Turbine components are on their way to Scituate

SCITUATE – The blades for Scituate’s new wind turbine could start arriving in town as early as today.

Delivery of the three 131-foot-long blades will be completed by the end of the weekend, town Director of Public Works Al Bangert said.

The rest of the turbine, including the tower, the hub and the nacelle, will be delivered next week, Bangert said.

The turbine site is near the wastewater treatment plant on The Driftway.

The exact drop-off times, as well as the travel routes of the trucks carrying the turbine pieces, will not be announced until several hours before the parts arrive.

“The State Police will be in control of the delivery,” Bangert said. “Over the course of the next week, the roundabout (connecting Route 3A, Route 123 and The Driftway) will be closed several different times.”

Planks will be set up so the trucks carrying the turbine pieces can drive straight through the center of the rotary. The length of the turbine’s parts make driving around the rotary unfeasible, Bangert said.

Road closures and delivery times will be posted on the town’s website as soon as the State Police release the information, Bangert said.

From 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, the public will have a chance to see one of the blades up close at the Widow’s Walk Golf Course. Town residents will be able to write their names or initials on the blade.

The 1.5-megawatt turbine is a project of Scituate Wind LLC, a partnership between Solaya Energy and Cohasset-based Palmer Capital.

An East Falmouth contractor, J.K. Scanlan will begin erecting the 400-foot turbine Jan. 30, Bangert said. It should be operational sometime in March.
