Local forum to explore health worries related to wind turbines

SHELBURNE – Want to know more about the possible health concerns that are being raised regarding commercial wind-turbine facilities? Dr. Nina Pierpont, a physician and author of “Wind Turbine Syndrome” will appear via Skype (an Internet-based video phone) at a forum called “Health Impacts of Industrial Wind.”

The Jan. 28 program begins at 7 p.m. in Memorial Hall on Bridge St. Pierpont, a Fellow of the American Academy off Pediatrics and a former professor at the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University, began her clinical study of “wind turbine syndrome” in 2006.

Falmouth’s 400-foot Wind One turbine has resulted in many residents’ complaints, leading to a temporary halt in that wind turbine’s operation.

Annie Hart Cool of Falmouth described the low-level noise created by the turbine as “the boot in the dryer.” She said the first year, before the turbine was “slowed down,” she had insomnia and began grinding her teeth in her sleep. She developed headaches five or six days a week, although she didn’t have headaches before the turbine was installed.

She and fellow Falmouth resident Neil Andersen, who says he also suffered health consequences, will be in Memorial Hall to describe their experiences.

Andrew Wells, chairman of Ashfield’s Wind Advisory Committee, will host and moderate the event.

The event’s sponsors are Walter Cudnohufsky, founder of the Conway School of Landscape Design, and Deborah Andrews of Shelburne Falls. They are forming a “Community Continuing Information Committee” to coordinate and plan a series of informational events. They are looking for more members of the community to join them.
